A few years ago I visited Japan and picked up a nice piece of fake otoro sushi from Kappabashi in Tokyo and a takoyaki keychain in Dotonbori. They've sat on my computer ever since. I recently visited Japan and saw all the amazing food models at the local restaurants. I was able to buy a few while I was there. One of the vendors gave me Fake Food Japan's web site and I liked the looks of the quality of the displays including sizes available. I was really impressed with the models I received. Good quality and the correct portion sizes (very important in my job). I have gotten great feed back from my patients and co-workers on how realistic the models are. "Good enough to eat", "Makes me hungry just looking at them", etc. I teach diabetic patients and their families about responsible eating. When we were visiting Japan last month, we knew we wanted to get a nice collection of sampuru. We knew about its rich century-old traditions, and we had recently seen a fascinating show about it at Japan House in London.

We saw some great pieces in Tokyo (and even took a workshop in Kyoto where we made our own - lots of fun, though of course nowhere near as good as the real thing . . . well, the real fake thing.). We ended up not buying any in Japan because we didn’t have room to bring back everything we would have liked, and we were worried about it being too fragile to cram into our suitcase. So when we got home, we did an exhaustive web search and came up with a few places in Japan that would ship to the US. It often feels a little risky to buy delicate crafts without seeing them in person, but the pictures we saw at Fake Food Japan convinced us that this was probably our best bet, and they had a great variety, so we bought a whole large ‘meal’ full of foods: Makunouchi Bento, Fried Rice, Chilled Soba & Udon, Tonkatsu Ramen, and just for fun (though it didn’t go with the rest of the meal) an Indian Naan. They weren’t cheap, but we knew what market prices were for these fine replicas, and it seemed fair. Unlike a few other websites, their shipping process seemed straightforward and reliable.

The meal came a few weeks after we ordered it, and everything was exquisite! Packaging was perfect, everything arrived intact, and there were no problems or delays with shipping. We knew from looking at shops in Japan that most sampuru are carefully and artistically constructed, but we also noticed that some merchandise was just a bit better than others: maybe an A versus an A- (I’m a retired professor!). Our batch from Fake Food Japan was an A+! So beautifully detailed, and life-like. It matched (if not exceeding) the quality of the very best we saw in Japan. I am thrilled to have this, and recommend their products very very highly.

Find included a picture of our food replicas in their new home. The shrimp and lotus root tempura on the blue plate were our own constructions from the workshop we took, not from Fake Food . . . and NOT an A+. Maybe a B, giving us amateurs the benefit of the doubt. And the other items on that plate are replicas that we did buy in Japan - just a few small things to bring home.

Thanks for an excellent fake dessert with kiwi, peaches, mandarin oranges, ice etc. We received it yesterday at the Science Centre in Trondheim Norway. I am fantasy creature sculptor and needed some realistic cucumber maki for a display in a shop window in Madrid for one of my upcoming creations, a kappa. After searching the web I decided to buy from Fake Food Japan because they have a big catalogue with lots of products and the quality looked good in the pictures. I received my order so fast (it took not much longer than a week from Japan to Spain and my first impression when opening the parcel was so good. The kappa maki and cucumber pieces I bought look so realistic, especially when it comes to the rice, which seems to be hand crafted joining single grains of fake rice instead of being a full plastic piece (which happens with other producers). Also, every piece slighlty differs in look to the other one due to the hand made process, which gives so much realism when putting different pieces of the same kind of fake food together, as they don't look at all like mass produced products. In my opinion Fake Food Japan is a great option for whoever is in need of fake food such as restaurants and artists looking for fake Japanese food for a display, atrezzo or just as a decoration. I will certainly buy again if I ever need fake Japanese food in the future :)
